Help Your Child to Clean Their Room and Keep it That Way

If your child has let their room get out of hand, it is time for some intervention. You will probably need to help your child if you have ignored the condition of their room for awhile. When your child’s room is covered with clothes and toys, they can feel frustrated at the thought of getting it clean. Take an afternoon to clean with your child.

When helping your child to clean a room that has gotten out of control, it is important to make them do most of the work (if they are able to do so based on their age). They will not learn to keep a clean room if you do all the work for them. You can help them to do some but certainly not all of the tasks at hand.

Give your child instructions to help them get their room cleaned up. Help your child to sort through any clothes that are scattered about so that they can put clean clothes away and toss those that are dirty in the hamper.

Bring a garbage bag to your child’s room with you. Have them pick up any items lying about that are clearly trash. You can then help your child sort through anything else that is lying around to determine if anything else can be thrown away.

Help your child to dust their furniture and any other items that need dusting. You should also help your child to get their floor vacuumed well. Do not forget to help your child change their bed linen and to make their bed (if they are too young to do so on their own).

After your child’s room is clean, provide him or her with practical advice on how to keep it that way. You should remind them that they need to throw dirty clothes in the hamper each day. If they are old enough to put away their own clothes, remind them of the importance of putting clothes away they are clean.

You might want to ask your children to start neatening their room each day so that they do not get overwhelmed again. You must do your part to help you r children learn to clean their room.
